We fell in love with this design while making it, particularly the flowers with the jeweled centers!

Cakes like this showcase perfectly how to make a big statement with only three tiers.

A Very 70's Inspired Wedding

The cake's design was inspired by the Bride's unique and gorgeous veil!

For their honeymoon, this bride and groom took a roadtrip in a restored VW bus, and so the second wedding cake/groom's cake was made as a retro VW bus. We've made a whole lot of cakes in the shape of various cars, but this is by far our favorite!

A Few Groom's Cakes

It's been a little while since we've posted, and we'll be posting much more very shortly, but for today we thought it would be nice to share with you a few of our more memorable Groom's cakes from the past couple of months!

The football helmet  is a great and popular choice for a Groom who loves sports and has a favorite team!

This wedding was at the lovely Lange Farm in their Garden Room.

This Groom's cake was served during the rehersal dinner, at Jackson's Bistro's Waterfront Room (such an amazing view!).

As you've probably guessed, the Groom loves his Xbox, and this Bride wanted to suprpise him with a cake made to resemble one of his favorite pastimes!

This is one of our most popular Groom's cake designs, with airbrushed details and white chocolate fins! This particular cake was just about 4 feet long!

As huge fans of LOST, we were (more than just a little) excited when we recieved an email from Quinn inquiring about a Groom's cake to surprise her now husband Matt. Quinn and Matt are both huge fans of LOST as well, and Quinn wanted to incorporate a few key personal elements into a cake with a LOST theme without being too obvious or cheesy.

We started by asking Quinn if Matt had any favorite episodes, or anything in particular he loved about the show that could be translated into a cake.

(I apologize to anyone who is reading who is not a LOST fan or who has never seen the show- I'm sure this won't make any sense!)

One of Matt's favorite episodes is 'The Constant' and Quinn added that they like to call each other 'their constants', and in regards to the Island they liked to say that 'This is our Island'. We knew those were two key elements we wanted to use in the cake design.

The first idea we had (and the one we ended up running with and designing around) was to have a stack of books featuring a few stand outs from the show- The Bible (in which a spliced reel of film was hidden in, in one of the Dharma stations), Charles Dickens Our Mutual Friend (a book one of the main character's, Desmond, was saving as the last book he would read before he died), and the featured book sitting opened is Daniel Faraday's journal (which was shown in the episode 'The Constant' opened to a page with the statement 'If anything goes wrong, Desmond will be my constant.'). We thought it would be a nice way to incorporate the idea of Quinn and Matt being each other's constants by using the journal and changing 'Desmond' to 'Quinn'- a little touch that the LOST fans should appreciate!

Instead of using a cake topper on a wedding cake, it's a good idea to use it for the groom's cake! And isn't this topper adorable?!

Testimonial Tuesdays: Cash's Pirate Cake

A few weeks ago we made a pirate themed cake for Rebecca and her son Cash, for Cash's second birthday. We've worked with Rebecca and her family in the past, and it is always a pleasure- and usually a fun cake to work on (this being no exception). We were super busy on the day of this order, and we didn't have a chance to take a picture, so it was especially exciting to hear from Rebecca and to see that she included a picture. (And aren't they both so cute!?)

Thank you, Rebecca, for sending us such a great photo!

We absolutely LOVE getting pictures from the actual events, especially the super cute ones like this.

Here is what Rebecca had to say:

Dear Kim,

I want to thank you for the fabulous pirate cake you did for me and my family in celebration of my son's second birthday!  As always, the cake was a hit, not to mention it was exactly as I had hoped, and so much more.  You are absolutely amazing at what you do and we are so fortunate that you have been willing to do our "birthday" cakes.  Thank you again, we truly appreciate your service.

I hope all is well, take care.

Kind Regards,

Rebecca Albert

Testimonial Tuesdays: "Lemur Cake Liz"

Liz contacted us back in May in need of a graduation cake, with a wonderfully quirky request. Liz studies animal behavior, and wanted to portray her favorite animals on her graduation cake- which is where the Red Ruffed Lemur comes in!

For her cake we decided to do a two tier with some simple and pretty pink piping, a simple branch going up the front side of the cake (to tie in the lemurs), with the lemurs sitting around the branches The end result was super cute, and we greatly appreciated the kind words she sent us after seeing the cake.

We wish all the best to Liz in her future now that she has finished with school!

Here is what Liz had to say:

I ADORED my cake!!!! It was exactly what I was hoping for, and all my guests just loved it. They all asked me where I ordered such a cake and I told them all about Chocolate Pi and the phenomenal and caring people who run it :-) My mom just went on and on about how sweet you were, and was even more impressed when I told her how we have emailed back and forth eighteen times working this whole thing out. The guests all loved the cake and wanted to know all about Chocolate Pi, so I gave them your website and told them about what a great experience I had had - for the second time. You are a lovely person to work with, and doing business with you has been an absolute pleasure. I only wish that I could have picked up the cake myself so that I could have thanked you face-to-face, and so that you could have seen my reaction :-)

Just know that your caring work is greatly appreciated, and that the cake is the most delicious and lovely confection that I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The lemurs were so accurate! Just perfect. :-)

Most sincerely,

"Lemur Cake Liz"

Comparing Two Sides of One Idea

One thing  we've seen a lot of lately and hope to see a lot of in the future is a movement towards using multiple individual cakes on a cake table rather than one larger tiered wedding cake. This opens the door for many options that wouldn't really make sense with only one cake. Each individual cake can be a different color- or different shades of a color, and it can look much more natural than if each tier of a larger wedding cake were a different color. You can mix and match cake stands for a more varied look that can be anything from modern to DIY Chic, to classic, vintage- really the list goes on and on. Large tiered cakes' weight and size limit what cake stands could be used for them.

One of the most exciting things about this trend is the way that it allows more for the cake table itself to be a part of the design of the reception. It goes hand in hand with the idea of candy tables and dessert bars, and is a wonderful way to be inventive on a very  special day.

Below is a comparison of two very different weddings we've done recently where the bride and groom opted to have multiple smaller cakes.

The Best of May 2011

We had a great month this past May, and with that came many different and distinct wedding cakes that we had the pleasure of making. Lately the trends seem to support a focus on texture as a main design element, and throughout May we definitely saw that in these cakes. We are loving this trend, so hopefully it sticks around for a while.

I've picked a few of our favorites from the month to share with you,

Enjoy!

This cake has a wonderful contrast with black and eggplant on a white base. Reception at the beautiful and classy Armani's restaurant in the Grand Hyatt.

Individual homey style cakes and French Macarons make up the cake table at this reception. We love buttercream cakes like these- they look like the definition of yummy, and have a great nostalgic quality to them!

An assortment of vintagey cake stands pulls this look together perfectly.

Casual and fun, but also vintage and elegant- this was a really great way to tie the cake table into a beautiful reception at Nova 535 in St. Pete.

A very elegant traditional design with a touch of a modern feel with clean and minimal details. We love the tone on tone texture that the fleur de lis provides, just enough to make a statement without being too obvious.

This dessert table went hand in hand with the fleur de lis wedding cake pictured above. Individual dessert shooters, hand made chocolate candies, and (our favorite!) delicious French macarons in our signature abstract sugar bowls provide an extra set of options for desserts- plus this makes makes for a great visually pleasing display of sweet treats for your guests.

Roses, hydrangea petals, and lace detailing in creams and white tones come together to create a perfectly beautiful wedding cake!

The texture on the fondant is the last detail, but an important one as it really pulls everything together.

Silver dragees above a fondant ribbon add an unexpected element to this wedding cake, subtle and gorgeous- this type of detailing is great because it allows for a cake to have very strong and artistic design elements while still maintaining a sharp and clean overall feel. Vintage meets modern.

The dragees were inspired by the bride's unique pink dress and it's beaded neckline (to see pictures of the reception including pictures of the aforementioned dress go here).

It's always really nice when we are able to use (a) detail(s) from something like the bride's gown- it becomes even more personal and individual and unique, not to mention beautiful!

It's not often that we use photos from professional photographers on our blog (although we love so many of them out there!), but we didn't have a chance to get a picture of this particular cake at the reception site, and Carrie Wildes happened to take this Beautiful shot of the cake, so I couldn't resist adding it!

For more work by Carrie Wildes visit her site here,

and for more photos of this wedding at the Lange Farm in Dade City from Carrie Wildes' blog click here.

These colors made for a very bright and fun color scheme! The bottom tier was based off of the bride and groom's wedding invitation design, and the top tiers mimicked the texture of the bride's gown.

Quite often it's the small, unusual details of a wedding cake that really pull everything together and can translate a unique sense of style and even a great sense of humor.

This reception took place at the Tampa Museum of Art in Downtown (one of our current favorite views, as it has an entire wall of made of glass that overlooks the University of Tampa and parts of Downtown Tampa's waterfront park.

A focal point of the main downstairs lobby/reception area of the museum is a bed of black stones underneath the staircase leading to the upstairs museum. The bride and groom decided to incorporate this in their cake, and so we covered the base of the cake with black fondant stones. It gives a very unexpected 'something extra' to a cake that's already beautiful and fun.

I couldn't resist adding a photo that included a view of UT and the floral arrangements.

Everything was very organic, a bit wild without being over the top. Branches are a great addition to centerpieces and add a very natural untamed beauty.

Florals by The Potting Shed

and for more (very fun dynamic) photos of the reception you can visit Pietri Photography's Blog.

These monogram petit fours go with the wedding cake that can be seen below. A petit four was placed at each plate at the reception- which is always a nice addition to any place setting!

The piping design of this cake was based off of a Vera Wang lace, silver and gold complement each other nicely in this way. Alternating petal shaped and round tiers, topped off with a white chocolate vase topper give this cake a height and style that is impossible to overlook.

There is  a lot going on in this cake, but rather than being overwhelming everything works together and presents itself beautifully. There is a fine line between a cake being impressive, and it looking cluttered or unfocused. That's a very important thing to keep in mind when looking into designing your wedding cake, and sometimes keeping the colors minimal and in similar tones can help different elements work together rather than clash.
